FROM THE PRINCIPAL
When I was an MTh student at SAIACS in 1994-96, Judith and I never imagined we’d back. But it’s happened. It was an unexpected honor to be invited by the Trust to be the Principal. We owe so much to India. I grew up in Kerala till I was eleven because my parents were missionaries. Looking around the globe to do some higher theological studies, it made sense to study at SAIACS and then I served as faculty until 2000. With our three daughters, we learned much during those years. So it was a privilege to set up the publications department, and to visit each year to teach theology since then. So much has happened since graduation day in March 2008 when I was commissioned. Judith and I have left our three daughters in New Zealand and we’ve settled into campus life. We have farewelled Dr Hrangkhuma, the previous Principal, for his sabbatical. We have participated in a lively stakeholder’s consultation, got to know the members of the faculty team and listened to ideas of how SAIACS should advance. Another highlight has been to receive back to SAIACS Dr Arun and Mrs Sonia Kumar after their doctoral studies in the UK. Arun will be heading up the new Religions department which we launch next year. In June we welcomed forty-three new students to SAIACS for the new academic year. It has been good to see them learning the way things work and beginning to have their dreams shaped by God’s mission. I’m conscious of following in the footsteps of some amazing leaders, who have built up SAIACS over the years. My ambition is to take SAIACS from good to great. It has achieved much but there is so much more it can do. To become great will involve four things: a great purpose, great passion, great people in great programmes; global fellowship. SAIACS exists for a great purpose; an epic purpose big enough to invest our lives in. It exists to train great Christian leaders for South Asia for ministry, mission and marketplace. Greatness is a patient, disciplined ambition to serve others for their good and God’s glory (Mark 10:43). Our ambition is to share in what God is doing, his mission for which Jesus Christ came and for which the church exists. Dr. Ian Payne
