CERTIFICATE COURSE IN THEOLOGICAL LIBRARIANSHIP

SAIACS offers a 3 months certificate course in Theological Librarianship from January 2012 to March 2012.

Objectives:

  • Equip students with theories and practices of library science.

  • Enable students to learn about and handle theological resources.

  • Help students to understand current trends in library automation technology.

  • Encourage students to face and address the challenges of Indian theological libraries.

Course Content
There are 5 major topics as mentioned below. Practical training will also be covered in this course.

  • Library Organization & Management.

  • Information Sources and Services (Theological resources will be covered)

  • Organization of Library Materials

  • Library Classification (Practice)

  • Library Cataloguing (Practice)

  • Field visits and Practical Training

Who can apply: Those who are sponsored by Theological Colleges and are planning to serve in Theological College Libraries can apply for this certificate course.
Endorsement: This certificate course is endorsed by ATA India and ITLA.
Certificate: Certificate in Theological Librarianship is awarded at the graduation ceremony of SAIACS on 31 March 2012.

There will be separate accommodation for men and women. Each Institution will bear the travel, pocket money, accommodation, food, and course fees of the candidate. The actual cost of this course is Rs.50,000/. But SAIACS offers this course for Rs. 35000/- with food and accommodation (excluding travel and pocket money) and for Rs. 20000.00 without accommodation. Kindly make your payment by demand draft in favour of SAIACS, Bangalore.

Resource Persons:
Qualified and experienced librarians from various theological colleges will be teaching the subjects. There will be workshops and seminars on special topics by Library and Information Science subject experts.

The certificate course is an intensive comprehensive training in all the basics of Library and Information Science Management. The participants will be given hands on experience in all areas of Librarianship.

SAIACS subscribes to the following electronic resources.

1. ATLA Religion Database with Serials:

The ATLA Religion Database is an essential tool for the study of religion. It is the premier index to journal articles, book reviews, and collections of essays in all fields of religion. The fact that many publishers solicit the inclusion of their journals in the ATLA Religion Database is indicative of the stature it has achieved in the community of religion scholars. The 1.7 million+ records in the ATLA Religion Database include:

570,000+ journal article records.
237,700+ essay records from 16,700+ multi-author works.
525,400+ book reviews of 269,700+ books.
1,677 journal titles, 546 of which are currently indexed
languages: 55% English, 8% German, 5% French, 1% Spanish, 1% Italian, 30% other.
Coverage from 1949, with retrospective indexing for some journal issues as far back as the nineteenth century.

Coverage areas for ATLA RDB include: Bible, archaeology, and antiquities, human culture and society, church history, missions, and ecumenism, pastoral ministry, world religions and religious studies and theology, philosophy, and ethics.

2. NetLibrary Collection:

SAIACS Library subscribes to netlibrary collection of 400 ebooks, scholarly, reference, and professional full-text books in an electronic format from the world's leading university presses and commercial publishers, and includes such popular series as the Idiots and Dummies Guides. Users can search for individual netLibrary titles, or perform full-text searches of one or across multiple netLibrary titles.

What is NetLibrary?

NetLibrary offers the most comprehensive collection of eBooks and eContent available online.
You can access a wide range of research, reference and reading materials from any location.
Depending on your library’s collection, available econtent resources may include:

• eBooks. Electronic full-text copies of published print materials, such as reference books, scholarly monographs, and trade books.
• Audiobooks. Digital Audiobooks that can be downloaded on your desktop, or transferred to portable devices.
• eJournals. Electronic versions of industry and scholarly journals.
• Subject Centers. Subject-specific resource centers that combine related content with enhanced search tools.
• Databases. Links to related databases and additional online resources.

Accessing NetLibrary

There are three ways to access NetLibrary:

1. From in-library computers in the research lab.
2. By logging into www.netlibrary.com as a remote user with username and password provided by the librarian.

Tip: You don’t need a NetLibrary user account to search for or view eContent from within your library or through your library’s online catalog, but to log in as a remote user you will need to establish a NetLibrary account.

Creating a NetLibrary account

If you wish to access eContent from outside your library, create bookmarks, or save notes, you will need to create a NetLibrary user account from within your library or organization.

1. Ask SAIACS' librarian (library@saiacs.org) how to access the Web page with the account creation function.
2. Enter your identifying information (user name, password, email address) and submit it.
