MASTER OF ARTS IN THEOLOGICAL STUDIES (MATS)

Purpose

The Master of Arts degree in Theological Studies is a two-year residential programme that enables outstanding university graduates, who wish to deepen their personal relationship with the Lord and gain pastoral and mission skills by obtaining a comprehensive theological knowledge. The degree will qualify a graduate to practice and teach at undergraduate (B.Th.) level.

Entry Requirements

Applicant must hold a Bachelor’s Degree (a B.Th. is permitted), with at least a second class pass, from any recognised University or theological college or seminary that is accredited by the Asia Theological Association or the Senate of Serampore College. Others may also apply. In such cases, however, the faculty council will grant admission according to its discretion. A B.Th. degree holder with a first class from an accredited institute may apply to join the M.A.(T.S.) second year class and graduate with a M.A.(T.S.) in Theological Studies in one year after completing 9 modules.

Special Admission

A. Students with A- grade and above in the BTh of a college accredited by Asia Theological Association (ATA) or other recognised college, may enter Year 2 of MA studies after the course in research study and writing method. If they reach a B+ average in that year, they may be invited to study for MA Honours in their second year.

B. Exemption from the normal entry requirements may be granted by the Admissions Committee in the case of applicants who have significant experience in Christian ministry, come with a very high written recommendation from their sending organisation or church, and who are proficient in English. Special admission in any year is limited to 10% of the M.A. student intake.

Registration as a Candidate
