DOCTOR OF MINISTRY (DMin)

The Doctor of Ministry (DMin) is a non-residential degree. Based upon the student’s specialisation, the student will earn one of the following degrees:

- Doctor of Ministry in Missiology
- Doctor of Ministry in Pastoral Ministries

Purpose

The Doctor of Ministry programme provides advanced training and relevant ministry applications within biblical and theological frameworks in the context of students’ present and future ministry. It is the highest professional degree for those engaged in local church and para-church ministries, world missions, and applied training, but it does not lead to Ph.D. The programme is deliberately offered “in ministry” rather than “in residence”, and, as such, requires meaningful experience in ministry. Each course assumes ministry experience and endeavours to integrate learning with the student’s ongoing ministry and goals.

Structure

The DMin degree will require 4 core modules, 4 specialty modules, a thesis project, and residential requirements of the modules in October and April of each academic year.

Year-1 Four core modules in 2 blocks with 2 weeks of residency in each block and assignments
Year-2 Four speciality modules in 2 blocks with 2 weeks of residency in each block and assignments
Year-3 A thesis project (150-200 pages) including 2 blocks of 2-week residence sessions
While students are expected to complete their thesis project by the third year of their studies, they may take up to 5 years to complete the programme on payment of the annual fee for each year of extension beyond three required years.

Entry Requirements

The programme is open to people with the following prerequisites:
1. Have passed MA in Christian Studies, or MDiv, BD, MTh, or equivalent from a recognised institution, done in residence, and passed with at least B grade or equivalent.
2. Show evidence of passing a biblical language component in their previous transcript.
3. Have at least three years of full time active ministry experience after MDiv or equivalent.
4. Comply with the application procedure as in SAIACS Prospectus.
5. Provide documented evidence that their organisation supports their study, will decrease their workload for the period of study, and allow the candidate time to work on their thesis project applicable to the present and/or future ministry of the candidate.
6. Who pass the SAIACS entrance interview and examinations. Candidates will need to satisfy selectors that they have the capacity to motivate themselves and study on their own.
7. Selection will be provisional. Adequate standards and timeframes will be required. All required assignments will be due on specified dates unless an extension of time has been granted or a relevant medical certificate is provided.
8. A limited number of students are accepted each year.

Communication

- The Director of the DMin programme will be the primary contact for communication.
- Following acceptance in the DMin programme, students and professors will communicate by post, email, and Internet.
- All students will need to be computer literate and have access to email and Internet.
- Library resources of SAIACS will be available to all DMin students while in residence at the SAIACS campus. Those who wish to be in residence for additional access to the library and to mentors may do so on payment of a daily/weekly fee to the bursar.
- Professors will send back all assignments with comments and marks within three weeks of receipt. If they are not able to do so, they will communicate this to relevant students with proposed date on which they will be able to return assignments.
- Students will be encouraged to set up their own email group, especially in small groups of their specialty areas, for peer encouragement and comment.

module flexibility

Students have the option of up to three modules studied in other timetabled M.Th. courses at SAIACS, with assignments and grading at D.Min. standards. They may do this for one month without extra fees. For two or three modules, they will pay accommodation at Rs 2000 per month. They may also take one module as an independent supervised study under a lecturer who has expertise in a particular subject area not offered that year.

time requirements

Years 1 and 2: The D.Min. modules will be in two blocks of 5 months, Mid-August to Mid-January and Mid-February to Mid-July, with one week of residence on the SAIACS campus (up to 30 hours of interaction or library research) per module. Students will come for two weeks of residence in two blocks per year.

There are three parts to each module:
The Pre-Residence Period, when students read and interact with course material and write assignments.

The Residence Period at the SAIACS campus with lectures and seminars (30 hours during one week). Classes will typically meet Monday through Friday 8:30 AM to 5.00 PM.
The Post-Residence Period with further interaction with course material and assignment(s).

D.MIN. CANDIDACY

To obtain candidacy, i.e. permission to continue and write a thesis, students will need to obtain an average of at least 55% in the 8 regular modules, and pass in the preparation and defence of a thesis proposal.

THESIS PROJECT IN YEAR 3 & 4

The D.Min. Thesis project will be 70 to 80,000 words with 1.5 line spacing (excluding appendices). Students should discuss their proposed thesis project topic with the Coordinator of the D.Min. programme in the first year, in order to be alert for relevant material.
